SFTPGo: The Secure and Open Source Managed File Transfer Server
SFTPGo is an open source secure file transfer solution, with multi-protocol support, fine-grained access management and native compatibility with major cloud storage providers.
What Is SFTPGo?
SFTPGo is a fully featured, open source managed file transfer (MFT) solution, highly configurable and deployable on your own infrastructure. It exposes files securely over multiple protocols including SFTP, SCP, FTP/S, WebDAV and a built-in HTTPS web interface. It runs on everything from small embedded devices to large clusters, on Linux, Windows, macOS and FreeBSD.
Multi-Protocol and Multi-Storage
One of SFTPGo's greatest strengths is its flexibility in terms of protocols and storage backends. A single user can access their files via SFTP, FTP or WebDAV, with the same permissions applied regardless of the protocol used. On the storage side, SFTPGo supports local filesystem, encrypted filesystem, S3 buckets, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage and remote SFTP servers. Multiple backends can coexist within the same installation through the virtual folders system.
Access Management and Security
SFTPGo includes a very granular access control system. For each user and each directory, it is possible to precisely define which operations are allowed: listing, download, upload, deletion, renaming, folder creation and symbolic links. Authentication supports passwords, SSH public keys, SSH certificates, two-factor authentication (TOTP compatible with Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Authy), as well as LDAP and Active Directory integration. Brute-force protection is built in natively, with an automatic blocklist manager and IP address range filtering.
Automation with the Event Manager
SFTPGo's Event Manager allows administrators to define rules that react to server events: file upload, deletion, user login, quota exceeded, and more. These rules can trigger notifications, cross-backend transfers, retention policies or calls to external APIs. It is a powerful automation engine, without needing any third-party tool.
Administration and User Interface
SFTPGo provides two distinct web interfaces. The WebAdmin interface lets administrators manage users, groups, virtual folders, event rules and server configuration from a browser. The WebClient interface is designed for end users: they can manage their files, update their credentials, enable two-factor authentication and share files directly from the browser.
Flexible Deployment
SFTPGo adapts to all deployment contexts. It can be installed directly on a server, run in a Docker container or orchestrated via Kubernetes with Helm support. Configuration data can be stored in SQLite, MySQL, PostgreSQL, CockroachDB or in-memory. A Terraform provider is available for Infrastructure as Code workflows.
Real-World Use Cases
Organizations looking to replace a legacy FTP server with a modern, secure and multi-protocol solution. Businesses needing to expose files to external partners with strict access rules and time-limited links. Institutions managing large volumes of files with compliance and traceability requirements. Technical teams needing to automate file flows between multiple storage systems.
